Motorola Considering Wi-Fi & Touch Screens

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

What one does, all will do.  Right?  Maybe not, but after the iPhone launched touch-screen goodness onto the world, it really makes you wonder just how many cell phone companies are going to follow suit in the weeks and months to come.  One of those companies that’s already tossing the idea around, is Motorola.

Not only are they pondering the ol’ touch screen introduction, they are also playing with the idea of throwing wi-fi capability into their mobile phones.  What one does, all will eventually do, I guess is a little more appropriate.  Good thing Motorola has some brains behind their operations because instead of focusing all their time, money and energy on “one stand-out” product, their new global strategy will be to spread out the love, and develop a wide variety of products that will appeal to almost everyone, almost everywhere.

Not a bad idea, if you ask me.   The question I am starting to conjure up in my brain, is how long from now will every phone look, feel, and act just like an iPhone?  Not that it’d be a necessarily bad thing, but still, will all things eventually merge into one?  I hope not.

Buy a Bluetooth for your teenaged driver, too - it will save lives

Monday, September 10th, 2007

As we anticipate the rollout later this year for MoGo’s Bluetooth headset, more and more states are introducing laws that will make these headsets not only useful, but lawful.

A hands-free solution, like a Bluetooth, may be the only thing that stands between you and an expensive ticket.

Or, more importantly, an accident.

While there are no firm statistics yet that prove the danger of using a phone while driving, common sense and anecdotal evidence from accident reports both demonstrate that splitting your attention while driving just isn’t safe.

Over a dozen states as well as the District of Columbia have passed bans on cell phone usage (either talking without a headset or texting) while driving - most as restrictions for teenagers.

But California is now leading the pack with a recently passed law that goes into effect July, 2008.

The legislation is applicable to all drivers of all ages and makes it a violation to talk on your mobile without a headset while driving. The pain, if caught, is to the tune of a $285 ticket . That will be DOUBLED in construction zones.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s daughter turned driving age this year, which may explain why he signed the new law. However, make no mistake - this IS a sign of things to come nationally. The US is way behind the rest of the cell-phone world when it comes to these kinds of laws which have been in place for a long time abroad.

GPay as you Go for GPhone From Google?

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Good Gracious, another great gaggle of alliterative goodness.  Well all the “G’s” are adding up to the news that a patent has been filed for a new “pay as you go” mobile service from Google.  Speculation is what the internet does best and lately, with the quiet fluttering of photos around the blogosphere of a rumored “GPhone,” it’s at an all-time high.

The GPhone is purported to be a low-cost, internet enabled phone that allows users to place mobile calls, browse the internet and who knows what else.  With the iPhone already out, it’s not a stretch to imagine the types of features a company with Google’s money could throw into a new mobile phone product.  I gotta admit, I’m a bit excited about the prospect.

According to the article I just fumbled upon, GPay’s patent basically describes the following:

“…a system where a user sends a text message to Google that gives details of a payment to a specified payee. GPay would debit the user’s bank account and credit the payee. It suggests that a user would not have to keep an account with Gpay as payments would be made externally.”

Smooth.  The bottom line is, it better be Bluetooth, because if it’s not I’m gonna be a hot little potato.  IF a GPhone enters the mobile playing field, you better believe I want to be able to use the MoGo Headset with it.  Hey Google, if you’re reading, make sure it’s Bluetooth Ready.  Please.

The End of Free WiFi?

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

When I was compiling notes for my post on the best airports for wired travelers, I realized that the recent bloom of free WiFi is shrinking. Fast.

Fee-based WiFi access has become standard in most urban airports. In fact, even when companies offer to build free WiFi for cities, they are sometimes turned away as local governments prefer the tax revenue over the convenience for the travelers.

Police are cracking down on ‘free WiFi’ usage at restaurants by non-customers. (Remember the poor guy who got charged with a felony for not buying a donut?)

And even places we think of as WiFi refuges - like hotels - are quietly moving to a fee-based system. Where before you could just turn on and surf away, now you need a code associated to your room number. A bill that says the WiFi fee is ‘$0.00′ or ‘waived’  is a quiet clue that maybe it won’t always be.

One of the biggest investors in free WiFi - Earthlink - has had to stop investing as they reorganize in response to their corporate financial health. Among the cities they had planned to build free WiFi infrastructures for was the beleaguered New Orleans.

By 2006, they had completed access for a “wireless system in 20 square miles of New Orleans along the repopulated banks of the Mississippi River“. But there they must stop and future plans for other cities have been scrapped, as well.

Like most wired travelers, I had assumed that someday I would be able to flip my laptop open most anywhere, anytime - like my cell phone - and find signal.

And while that may still happen, now its clear that there will be a tug on my credit card each time I hit ‘Enter’… and that, I should of seen coming.

But didn’t.
