UK Going Mobile…In The Air

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

When in the name of all that is good and pure, is the United States going to completely allow this?  Now, as I’ve mentioned before, the allowance of mobile phone calls in-flight has a plethora of pro’s and more than its fair share of cons.  While it WOULD be rad to call whomever you want whenever you want while flying, it most certainly WOULD NOT be rad to hear everyone else yacking at the very same time.  Yikes.

That said, the U.K. has officially approved in-flight mobile phone calls, just not during take-off and landing, and only after the plane reaches at least 3,000 meters according to reports.  According to the Office of Communications in the U.K., “The safety of passengers is paramount and mobile systems on aircraft will only be installed when they have secured approval by the European Aviation Safety Agency and the Civil Aviation Authority in the UK.”  Well at least they’ve thought it out.

Apparently the calls will be routed to an on-board base station and then sent out accordingly.  So, knowing this, how much do you want a Bluetooth headset to at least not have to HOLD the phone during your long flights?  Lets just hope they pre-install soundproof curtains between every seat from now on because the thought of hearing 250 passengers talking to 250 OTHER people all at the same time in a closed-in cabin at 30,000 feet is just, well, terrifying.

Beware Fake iPhone Upgrade!

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

2008 and already we’re worrying about scary Trojans that will infect and destroy all our precious electronics.  I’m tellin’ ya, the moment something rad gets invented, someone finds a way to mess it up, ruin it, and scare the pants off you thinking you’re going to fall victim to it!  What’s this world coming to?!

Ok, enough dramatic overreaction, now down to business.  What I say is true and there is floating around out there, a fake iPhone upgrade that just might get into your beloved touchscreen goodness and infect the whole thing.  According to the article I just read, “This Trojan claims to be a tool used to prepare the device for an upgrade to firmware version 1.1.3…When a user installs the Trojan, other application components are altered. If the Trojan is uninstalled, the affected applications may also be removed.”

In a word, Yikes.  Beware of this for all you mobile warriors out there that are just trying to get your iPhone to its most modern state.  Beware indeed.  So before you go installing anything wild on your phone, consult with Apple first.  Be smart.

Air France Lets The Cell Phone Calls Fly

Friday, December 28th, 2007

You know that guy that sits next to you on the airplane that still makes cell phone calls even though all the flight attendants told him to stow his belongings?  Yeah, that guy.  Well, if you’re flying on Air France, you can’t be mad at that guy anymore.  Bummer.

That’s right, Air France is going through a trial phase of allowing in-flight cell phone use for sending and receiving short messages or checking their email…in 3 months time, voice calls are going to be lumped into the experiment, assuming of course it doesn’t interfere with the comfort or well-being of other passengers.  Newsflash, it already is.

Actually, I shouldn’t be so harsh, as a member of the mobile generation I can fully appreciate the need to speak to someone when you want, where you want, and no mobile warrior is complete without that capability.  This will help in that regard but the true question remains…at what cost?  According to the article, to avoid navigation/plane operation issues here’s how it goes down:

“A small cellular base station inside the plane routs onboard calls and messages. Messages are sent to a satellite and then to the ground and the phone’s network. The service is supplied by OnAir, a company partially owned by airplane maker Airbus.”

Groovy, but does that mean I want to hear about your meatloaf, your business deal, your schmoopy woopy or your love bug?  No.  It doesn’t, and No, it won’t.

A Call To Readers: What Do You Want To Hear?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Today, instead of posting about some new product announcements, some cool Bluetooth products like the MoGo Mouse, MoGo Daptor, or MoGo Headset that is coming out soon, I want to ask You, the readers, a very important question.

To put it simply, what more do YOU guys want to read about?  What kind of information do YOU covet?  Do you want more news on products?  More opinions?  More editorials?  Sound off, because we want to know what YOU want to hear.

So, a call to arms, as it were.  In the immortal words of Jerry McGuire, “Help me, Help You.”  I want to know what you want to hear, and I want to know what you think!

Apple Being Sued Over iPhone Restrictions

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

I know you’re most likely not shocked over this news, especially given the fact that it’s been literally all over the news and blogs, but nevertheless, Apple is facing a lawsuit over the iPhone.

Apparently there are people out there that believe that the iPhone’s restrictions “constitute unlawful competition, which falls under the antitrust laws of the United States.” Wow, well played Law Man. That’s right, according to the article I read over at MobileCrunch, Lawyer Max Folkenflik filed a class action federal suit in Northern California against Apple for exactly that. The fact that other mobile phone companies are offering “unlocked” versions of their products to be used with other, often lower-priced carriers is a blatant example of how Apple is refusing to allow this. The fact that the iPhone comes bundled with Apple’s own software and exclusive to AT&T Wireless are going to be Folkenflik’s arguments against the company.

He actually might have a case here, especially now that he’s going to be using the fact that their latest software release purposely disabled non-Apple programs and only allows those programs that are “whitelisted” to be used.

I guess we’ll see what happens but bottom line is, people sign contracts and most likely knew what they were getting into. I understand where he’s coming from and he may indeed have a case, but I guess we’ll see.

Critical Microsoft Security Update Released

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

From the response we’ve had from Microsoft Vista users, it’s clear that there’s a lot of PC readers here. To that audience, we’d like to make sure you’re aware of a ‘Critical’ security update released by Microsoft yesterday.

As part of their regularly scheduled software update, they bundled 6 patched. 3 of them are rated ‘Critical’ by Microsoft - meaning you really should make sure they are installed on your system where applicable.

Of the 3, the one getting most of the noise is an Excel patch that targets a vulnerability in the company’s spreadsheet program that could let hackers break into a PC if its user opened a tainted spreadsheet.

It’s important you contact your System Administrator if you are in a supported situation or follow the instructions if you’re solo to make sure you’re protected by this patch.

Also packaged in this bundle:

  • Microsoft also addressed holes in its .NET Framework, the library of computer code that is part of Windows Vista and versions of Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003.
  • Microsoft addressed a security vulnerability in Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003.

While you’re at the site, remember you can sign up to have these periodic updates automatically pushed to your system - which is the easiest and smartest approach.
