iPhone Gets Software Update

by Tyler Knott Gregson | January 23rd, 2008

Fairly sure unless you’ve been living under a rock, you are well aware of the iPhone, the need for an update, and all the people that tried to manipulate theirs themselves and ended up with a big fat brick.  Ooops.

That said my friends, a REAL iPhone software update is finally here and by the sounds of things, it helps do some pretty nifty things.  According to the article I just read the new update allows users, “to find their location using the Maps application; text message multiple people in one message; create Web Clips for websites; customize their home screen; and watch movies rented from the iTunes Movie Rentals.”

While the iPhone notoriously lacks GPS, something that I’m guessing will be remedied in the future renditions of the device, the new update lets users find their location “automatically” by triangulating their position based on WiFi access points, and cell phone towers…good Lord, wouldn’t adding GPS just be, well, easier?

That said, if you are an iPhone user, use your iTunes to get things updated…I’m quite sure you’ll be happy.

  • Big Splashes at Macworld Conference & Expo

by Elizabeth Blair York | January 15th, 2008

Right on the heels of the mega-successful CES, the Macworld has kicked off in San Francisco.

Another event that showcases hip new technology, this year’s conference has not let us down.

During the kick-off, Steve Jobs opened up a standard-sized manila office envelope and slid out … a laptop.

    And the audience went wild.

The ultra-thin “MacBook Air” notebook computer is between .16 and .76 inches thick depending on the configuration you choose. It is packaged with a 80-gigabyte hard drive, and the option of a 64GB flash-based solid state drive as an upgrade.

    Cool!

This was followed up by confirmation that Apple IS entering the movie rental market. iTunes will have 1,000 movies for online rental by the end of February, with prices of $2.99 for older movies and $3.99 for new releases. You can choose to  watch instantly over a broadband Internet connection, or download and keep the movie for 30 days while having 24 hours to finish the movie once it’s started.

  • MoGo x54 Mouse: First Impressions

by Tyler Knott Gregson | November 12th, 2007

In a word:  Wow.  Photos of the MoGo X54 Mouse will be forthcoming, hands on photos, that is.  For now, all I can say is WOW.  The scrolling is smooth, the response time is amazingly fast, the accuracy of the pointer is spot-on, it charges fast, holds the charge forever and pairs in no time at all.

Secondly, and so so impressively to me, is the multi-media mode on the X54.  The ability to simply press the tiny Mode button on the back and have it switch to a remote controller for my iTunes, Windows Media Player, or other similar program on my computer was AMAZING.  From 35 feet away in my room, I was able to adjust the volume, change songs, pause, skip, fast forward and stop songs.  No getting up, no running around, just a simple push and you’re changing your music on the fly.  Unreal.

Bottom line, if you don’t have one yet, get one.  Now.   Be looking for some photos on Wednesday, they will be pretty and they will be saliva producing.  It’s almost Christmas, this would be such a perfect gift.

Also be looking out for first impressions for the MoGo Dapter.  I’ll say this:  Sweet.

  • 15 Ways To Increase Battery Life = Life Saver

by Tyler Knott Gregson | July 10th, 2007

Alright, show of hands, who has run out of laptop battery life at the absolute WORST time? Was it on a long plane flight, in the middle of the boredom-reducing movie you were playing? Was it during a presentation? Was it during a long email? Whatever the case, the chances are high that at some point, you’ve run out of coveted battery life at the worst time.

Those days could be over! I just found a sweet article over at Lifehacker via FriedBeef.com that has 15 tips on how to suck the most juice out of those little battery bricks. For brevity sake, since you’re a Mobile Warrior and time is of the essence, here are the Top 5 ways to get more battery life, head over and check out the full article for 10 more helpful ways:

“1. Defrag regularly - The faster your hard drive does its work - less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery. Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. (but not while it’s on battery of course!) Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.

    2. Dim your screen - Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.

    3. Cut down on programs running in the background. Itunes, Desktop Search, etc. All these add to the CPU load and cut down battery life. Shut down everything that isn’t crucial when you’re on battery.

    4. Cut down external devices - USB devices (including your mouse) & WiFi drain down your laptop battery. Remove or shut them down when not in use. It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.

    5. Add more RAM - This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has, rather than relying on virtual memory. Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy, so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.”

There you have it! Enjoy the rest of your day, get the most juice you can, and stay mobile!
