crave @ CNET.com Digs the MoGo Mouse

by Tyler Knott Gregson | March 19th, 2008

Just stumbled on another site this fine morning that has a pretty cool little post suggesting that all those in need of a rockin’ mouse that don’t want to have to deal with the pesky issue of “power.”

You know how it goes with most normal travel mice, they might be tiny and they might fit in your messenger bag or laptop case or briefcase, but then what inevitably happens is that you run out of juice, most often at the worst time, and most often lead to you frantically searching for batteries.  Not cool.  As all of you know by now, the MoGo Mouse line, all store inside your computer so you do not lose them, and the best part…it charges there too.  That’s right, need some juice?  Plug it in for 20 min.

Straight from their little article:

“Enter the ingenious MoGo Mouse BT, which operates wirelessly via Bluetooth and docks/recharges inside your notebook’s PC Card slot. How smart is that! Newegg.com has the MoGo Mouse BT for $29.99, plus $5.58 for shipping. That’s a pretty sweet deal, considering that most vendors sell it for around $70.”

Man, I couldn’t agree more.  Get over, Get one.  Now.  Please. :)

  • Tim Ferriss Blogs About MoGo!

by Tyler Knott Gregson | March 3rd, 2008

I don’t know if you’ve read his book yet, and if you haven’t, do, now, but Timothy Ferriss is a hero of mine, and if we’re honest, a genius.  That said, he is the author of the book “The 4-Hour Workweek,” and it’s amazing.  I was just browsing his site, something I do daily to check for rad updates, and I just so happened to see that he just so happened to have met our very own Matt Westover earlier on “The Big Idea.”

Matt gave ol’ Tim some MoGo Mice to use in a give-away contest/promotion on his very own site, and it was awesome to see him using such an awesome new technology to get readers of his blog to answer a very simple, but very important question:  “What is technology?”  Basically if you just upload a video answering this question (no dictionary help folks!) and link him to it, the fastest and best will win a MoGo Mouse from Tim, via Matt and all the good people here at Newton Peripherals.  Very cool.

Head over, get some helpful breakfast tips in the same post, and read about the MoGo Contest Tim Ferriss is running right now.  Always good to see people with like minded goals getting together to really make some changes.  Keep rocking Tim, and if you ever wanna come hang out in Montana, let me know.

  • Asking Elizabeth… New Orders, Old Orders

by Elizabeth Blair York | December 7th, 2007

Although many orders have been filled, there are still some folks patiently (and running-out-of-patiently) waiting for their new X54 mice.

To those folks (yes, I’m looking at you, Andy) I want to express a personal thanks. Your comments have been intelligent, clear, and often humorous as you look to your mailboxes for that order.

Although no one lets me play with the postage meters,  I want you to know that we read and personally pass to the right hands each email and comment.  If you are one of those handful looking for specific help  - please remember that the North-American Direct Support Mailbox  is  HERE.

Always helpful if you send include your order number, order date, company you have ordered from, in the “issue” box. Thanks.

In the meantime, a special thank-you and bow to Scott - who made us laugh out loud with the way he wrote about his issue:

Hi. I want to love you and your wonderful little Mogolicious Mice, but I
can’t. And do you know why I can’t? Because I have been told no less than
SEVEN (7) times from Tiger Direct that my X54 order will ship on x date,
only to have that day come and go with no fanfare, no joy and most
disheartening…no mouse, because, according to them, they are waiting
on you. Today, I was given a new date of December 20th…lucky number 7.
Please, can you guys give me a straight answer on when I really might be
able to expect my X54? I sent you a note a month ago, and was told that
Tiger Direct would have their backorders filled by the beginning of December.
That is looking not to be the case.

Scott - the MoGo team has your info and I’m sure they will be in touch, soon.

  • Wii and Bluetooth

by Elizabeth Blair York | December 7th, 2007

Don’t tell my son, but Santa is bringing us a Wii for Christmas.

And by ‘Santa’, I mean my enterprising husband - who hunted one down over Black Friday and stuffed it in the back of our closet. This is the display of some of the greatest restraint ever shown by a techno-crazy man.

One of my concerns about getting a Wii was the barrage of ‘Ping! Splat! Wowza!’ that would echo through our house at all hours as we engaged in Mario-Sonic Olympics.

    Not to worry.

As it turns out, Wii is Bluetooth-enabled. An excuse, if ever one was needed, to buy several MoGo Headsets when they roll into production. This will create a truly personal and wireless playing experience.

On the flip side, having those cool Wii-remotes (’Wiimotes’) be Bluetooth-based means that several enterprising hackers have found ways to turn them into mice for your computer.

Because the remotes aren’t designed for that use (unlike the MoGo x54 series) , the results of these experiments have been very interesting.

Perhaps my favorite is the guys who turned their Wii motes into Lightsabers on their Macs.

  • Ask Elizabeth: Upcoming Products

by Elizabeth Blair York | September 14th, 2007

    Q. I looked at the 54x & the 54x Pro. They physically look exactly the same. I wonder why you create 2 products where instead you could create a product for all the following functions. Maybe add a small switch to the Mouse or the Software on the machine to change modes… You can kill every other Presentation / Media Remote control out there.

    A. This is a great suggestion. We’ve heard from several other customers that they would like to see more features in one mouse, as well.

Since I don’t build ‘em, I don’t know what it would take to keep the product as small as possible while packing in even more features.

So I asked a VP, who tells me that, indeed - MoGo’s R&D is hard at work at the next generation of gadget. These engineers like to bust the envelope when it comes to what can be done, as evidenced by all the added features in this latest release.

    Q. Is there is a MoGo Mouse BT (PC Card type) with scroll capability coming out any time soon? I would buy it immediately. Please let me know.

    A. Unfortunately, no. Right now, MoGo has no plans to offer a standard PC Card type mouse with additional features from the original.

BTW, if you’re interested - I posted how you can get a non-scroll mouse to scroll back in May, based on instructions from Carlton Bale.

    Q. …Additionally, regarding the x54 Pro: What is being sent to the computer?(leftarrow, right arrow, B, ., +, etc.) Are the commands sent if powerpoint is not running or not in the foreground?

    A. A great question. I am wondering if any of our readers has tried this with their new MoGo’s - trying to use presentation mode if PowerPoint isn’t the active window?

I’ll see what answers I can get this week.

by Elizabeth Blair York | August 24th, 2007

    Q. I started to order an X54 Pro from TigerDirect, but it said the product would arrive January, 2008!

    A. First of all, thank you for letting us know when you have a problem with ordering a MoGo product. MoGo has been in conversations with TigerDirect to identify the issues as we hear about them and respond ASAP with the customers.

When ordering in the next week or so, expect a response of about a 30-day wait time (sometimes the computer will default to reporting 6-8 weeks). This is because the MoGo x54’s are not in stock yet, as production is still filling pre-orders.

Ordering from TigerDirect is your opportunity to be some of the first in line to receive these products!

    Q. I have a MacBook and it only has USB. How do I make it work with PC Card stuff like the MoGo mouse and my mobile wireless card?

    A. First of all, MoGo doesn’t recommend using adapters.

That said, there are ARE adapters. This is incredibly critical for Mac adherents like you (and me!). Until last year, though, these gadgets would run us $500- $750. Eek, indeed.

But last summer the price finally came down and there are some really good ones available . Although there isn’t one out there that I would personally endorse as standing out from the crowd, . Endgagdet did a review of one I’ve seen used by some of my colleagues.

    Q. Ricky asked us a bunch of great questions in a comment on Aug. 14. One of them was when the regular (media) version of the mouse is in the media mode and you press the buttons, does it send the standard global keypresses for mute, vol up/down, play/pause, stop, forward/back or is there special software that just targets certain programs?

    A. Ricky, NO special software is required as X54 transforms into true media remote.

BTW, Ricky, you also asked us to add the following applications to the chart at http://www.newtonperipherals.com/mogo_mouseX54.html or at least inform us of the compatibility of them, or as many of them as you can test: Winamp, Foobar2000, VLC, Media Player Classic, Windows Media Center - I’ve asked the guys at MoGo to let me know which ones they will test/add.

by Elizabeth Blair York | August 3rd, 2007

    Q. Hi, I was wondering if there is a 3 button version of the mogo mouse due for release ? Will it have some kind of scroll wheel too ? Can you give me some idea of the release time for this product? - Paul

    A. Hi Paul. MoGo hasn’t released news of a 3-button mouse (yet) but the X54 mouse that is rolling out DOES have a scroll wheel as well as some other mighty fine new features Please, take a look and let me know what you think!

    Q. My laptop didn’t come with BlueTooth in it but I think that the MoGo mouse would be really usefull for me. I just got a new Kodak Camera that uses BlueTooth, too and I would prefer that to the cables. Do I have to buy a new laptop with Bluetooth in it? Or is there a way to put Bluetooth in an older laptop?

    A. Excellent news. If Bluetooth didn’t come bundled with your laptop, then you can buy an adapter.

MoGo is rolling one out in a few months that will make your laptop compatible with their mouse and your camera, too. Some of the currently available adapters are bulky and stick out from the profile of your laptop. This was the problem MoGo wanted to solve with their own version (being the slim, slick gadget compan). Their “Dapter” is the size of a fingernail and will connect into the USB port.

    Good luck!

  • Scrolling without a scroll wheel

by Elizabeth Blair York | May 23rd, 2007

    Last February, the one & only Carlton Bale took a MoGo mouse on a trip and, like me, wished it had a scroll wheel;

…”here are new and innovative pointing devices that just don’t have room for a scroll wheel. Users are frustrated, everyone complains about it, and there is no apparent solution. Unless you remember Pointix Scroll ++; …. (software that) gave ‘old school mice’ the ability to scroll without one.”

Carlton, being Carlton, has found the old software and tried it out - with great success.

Here is his post with detailed instructions and the software (which is free).

    Thanks, Carlton!
