Double Cell Phone Battery Life? Count Me In!

by Tyler Knott Gregson | January 21st, 2008

Well well well, nothing like kicking off Monday morning with some good news!  The good news in question, kind friends, especially if you’re a mobile warrior is this:  Research into fuel cells might just be able to effectively DOUBLE your cell phone battery life.

Ok, now there is some not so good news…well, I suppose it depends on how positive of a person you are as to whether or not this news is bad or good:  This advance in technology won’t be ready until around 2010.   This is where your outlook can determine if that’s bad or good, bad in that it’s not NOW, but good in that it’s not 2050.  Right?

According to the article I just read:

“Angstrom Power recently completed trials of a fuel cell system that effectively doubled talk time and the overall battery life in mobile phones. The trial involved a Motorola SLVR L7 and a fuel system that fit inside the phone without modification. The Micro Hydrogen platform uses a new fuel cell architecture, micro-fluidics and a refillable hydrogen storage tank to provide power. Angstrom believes the technology could be built into phones as early as 2010, but the logistics of refilling/recharging systems have yet to be worked out.”

Sounds groovy to me, personally I am psyched for the day I don’t have to charge my phone mid-afternoon just so it doesn’t die in the evening!

by Tyler Knott Gregson | November 14th, 2007

All you mobile warriors out there that want to tackle the World Wide Web from your phone but don’t want to use the integrated browser that came with your phone…breath easy friends.  Relief is here.  Relief, in this case, is spelled OPERA.

That’s right, much-loved web browser Opera has just released their new Mini 4 Browser for your mobile phones.  The coolest part about this release, they claim it lets users view web pages on their phones exactly how they’d look on their desktop computers.  Wow, snazzy.

According to the article i just read,

“Two years ago, we introduced Opera Mini to the world because we wanted to bring the Web to users everywhere. Today, Opera Mini is the world’s most popular mobile browser,” says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera. “As a result, the mobile Web is now a mass phenomenon. Opera Mini 4 raises the bar for user-friendly access to the Web on
any mobile phone, anywhere in the world.”

Want it?  Head over and check it out.  Being mobile may have just gotten a whole lot easier.

  • Does Your Brain LIKE Your Mobile Phone?

by Tyler Knott Gregson | September 19th, 2007

Ahh the age old debate…do mobile phones hurt your brain?  Do they cause the rumored brain tumors, the cancer, the premature death?  In short, does your brain LIKE your mobile phone, or does it secretly loathe it, and try to put an end to it with powerful brain waves.

The latest belief is there is a good change that long term use of mobile phones might actually slow your brain’s functioning.  Wow.  The strange thing is, the same study also showed that frequent mobile phone users also showed better focused attention.  Hmm, so where do you turn?  Which do you believe?

The bottom line is, we may never know what to Truly believe…the article I read at MobileCrunch summed it up pretty darn sweetly:  “…all these studies about the effects on the health of mobile phone users may be meaningless. Remember how a few months ago mobile devices were being blamed for the disappearance of honey bees? It turns out they caught a virus. It is too early to panic about the dangers, or brag about the benefits, of the effects of mobile phone use. That’s what a brain is to think. “

  • Motorola Considering Wi-Fi & Touch Screens

by Tyler Knott Gregson | September 11th, 2007

What one does, all will do.  Right?  Maybe not, but after the iPhone launched touch-screen goodness onto the world, it really makes you wonder just how many cell phone companies are going to follow suit in the weeks and months to come.  One of those companies that’s already tossing the idea around, is Motorola.

Not only are they pondering the ol’ touch screen introduction, they are also playing with the idea of throwing wi-fi capability into their mobile phones.  What one does, all will eventually do, I guess is a little more appropriate.  Good thing Motorola has some brains behind their operations because instead of focusing all their time, money and energy on “one stand-out” product, their new global strategy will be to spread out the love, and develop a wide variety of products that will appeal to almost everyone, almost everywhere.

Not a bad idea, if you ask me.   The question I am starting to conjure up in my brain, is how long from now will every phone look, feel, and act just like an iPhone?  Not that it’d be a necessarily bad thing, but still, will all things eventually merge into one?  I hope not.

  • Africa Gets Some Mobile Phone Internet Capability

by Tyler Knott Gregson | August 27th, 2007

About time!  Well, actually I don’t know how accurate that is, because it most likely isn’t “about time” that they got wireless mobile internet capability seeing as though a large majority of the country is very much stuck in the 3rd world.  That said, is it exactly, well, right, that they are now getting mobile internet in some areas while others are without running water?  Hmm, talk about a misallocation of funds, but that’s neither here nor there, and certainly not for this blog.

Nevertheless, it’s mobile news, and for all you mobile warriors who may be traveling to the beautiful continent of Africa, most specifically in or around Sierra Leone, you might just be roaming…literally.  According to the article I just read:

“the Celtel mobile data from the Celtel mobile telecommunication will provide access to internet and exciting online downloads directly to Celtel subscribers on their mobile phones…mobile data is on the way and subscribers will soon enjoy the facility from their mobile phones sooner than later.”

Alas, big news for Africa, and big news for any and all mobile users that belong to Celtel’s loving arms.  Head over, bone up on the big break, and then head back and hook yourself up with some big bad MoGo gear to arm yourself for the trip.
