GPay as you Go for GPhone From Google?

by Tyler Knott Gregson | September 5th, 2007

Good Gracious, another great gaggle of alliterative goodness.  Well all the “G’s” are adding up to the news that a patent has been filed for a new “pay as you go” mobile service from Google.  Speculation is what the internet does best and lately, with the quiet fluttering of photos around the blogosphere of a rumored “GPhone,” it’s at an all-time high.

The GPhone is purported to be a low-cost, internet enabled phone that allows users to place mobile calls, browse the internet and who knows what else.  With the iPhone already out, it’s not a stretch to imagine the types of features a company with Google’s money could throw into a new mobile phone product.  I gotta admit, I’m a bit excited about the prospect.

According to the article I just fumbled upon, GPay’s patent basically describes the following:

“…a system where a user sends a text message to Google that gives details of a payment to a specified payee. GPay would debit the user’s bank account and credit the payee. It suggests that a user would not have to keep an account with Gpay as payments would be made externally.”

Smooth.  The bottom line is, it better be Bluetooth, because if it’s not I’m gonna be a hot little potato.  IF a GPhone enters the mobile playing field, you better believe I want to be able to use the MoGo Headset with it.  Hey Google, if you’re reading, make sure it’s Bluetooth Ready.  Please.

  • Ireland Bans Prisoners Using Mobile Phones

by Tyler Knott Gregson | August 16th, 2007

I guess this gives “Mobile Warrior” a whole new depth, now doesn’t it?  Not to be a little too sardonic, or, well, high school, but relating to the title of this post…Duh.

Why, I ask you, would Irish prisoners, or prisoners of ANY nation be allowed mobile phones at all anyway?!  Maybe I need to brush back up on my criminal justice law, but I am failing to see why prisoners would ever be allowed this technology.  Nevertheless, I digress…the point is, I just found out that Irish law has officially now banned mobile phone use after 3 prisoners were sentenced to unlawful use of a mobile phone while incarcerated.

    According to the article:

“Prisoners lose certain civil rights while incarcerated, one of which is an expectation of privacy. Mobile phones make it difficult for prison officials to monitor an inmate’s outside communications. Phone privacy allows prisoners to conduct criminal activity while still behind bars. I don’t know if an extra month is enough time to deter this activity, but the basic idea is a good one.”

Wow, bummer, and to think of all those poor prisoners that won’t really reap the benefits of the new MoGo Headset.  Sigh…

  • AT&T Video Share Finally Goes Live

by Tyler Knott Gregson | July 24th, 2007

Man, I seriously can’t wait for the MoGo Headset now.  Talk about the perfect Autumn distraction when we SHOULD be in school, SHOULD be listening to professors, or SHOULD be taking notes…now AT&T is officially live with their “Video Share” that allows users to share live video over their cell phones while talking.  Mmm.

Imagine this, pay off one of your friends to actually sit in on a class for you, kick back and watch from the comfort of your bed/futon/couch/favorite sports bar.  Now you can watch the World Series AND your professor at the same time.  Not bad friends, not bad.  Toss in the tiny-in-stature-but-huge-on-features MoGo Bluetooth Headset and you are officially in business.

Be advised you do have to pay for this service (at $4.99, who’s NOT going to pay for it) and details are not yet in on how well it works.  I’m just excited it DOES work.  Everyday I wake up we’re a heck of a lot closer to the Minority Report realities.  I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait!

Sound off, I’d love to hear what other kind of futuristic things YOU are excited for.  What don’t we have that we should?  What do we have that we shouldn’t?  Best answer gets a big pat on the back.  Sorry, it’s all I got for now.

  • AT&T Launches Wireless Video Share Service

by Tyler Knott Gregson | June 20th, 2007

Ever get the feeling that two different products are just going to absolutely compliment each other?  You know that great feeling you get when you have a bag of Oreos and a big glass of Milk; Peanut Butter and Jelly, Hamburgers and French Fries, and now, the MoGo Headset and AT&T’s newly launched video share service.

That’s right my friends, AT&T has finally and officially launched their new video share service that, get this, lets one user send a LIVE video feed from your phone to the persons phone you’re speaking with…in real time (or at least that’s what they hope).  While the service does require that both people have video-share capable phones and for now is only available in three markets, you have to admit, it’s pretty darn exciting.  I’ve said it before, but, Welcome to the Future.

So, like I said, combine this new, amazing feature with the new MoGo Headset.  Not only will you look like you’re talking to someone that isn’t there while you walk down the street, you’ll look like you’re Looking at someone that isn’t there too!  No, in all seriousness, these two technologies completely compliment each other.  If you’re a college student, think of the implications:  make your friend go to class with his phone aimed towards the professor and MoGo Headset in, while you chill out at home and watch the lecture.  Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

  • Pandora Music Available on Sprint Phones

by Tyler Knott Gregson | May 24th, 2007

First ESPN Mobile, now Pandora Music Box available ON your phone? Man, how are we going to get anything done, Ever?  That’s right friends, Pandora, the wildly popular “new music” finder online, is now officially available on 5 Sprint Phones already.

According to reports, the online music service will be available already on the the FUSIC by LG, the A900 and A920 by Samsung, and the 7500 and 8400 by Sanyo; consider Pandora’s box officially opened.  What’s cool about Pandora is it allows you to have a completely customized, albeit randomized, music experience right on your phone…no PC necessary.  What’s also cool is, it allows you to be introduced to new bands you’ve never heard of that Pandora believes you might just like.

Not to toot our own horns, but again, pairing a service like this with the MoGo Headset is just plain genius.  The ability to listen to all new music without having any pesky wires dangling out of your ears is, in a word, priceless.   Plus, this way you can leave the phone in your pocket or backpack, have the headset in your ear and be rocking out without anyone being the wiser to it.  Not bad amigos, not bad at all.

  • Hurry Up MoGo Headset, I Need You

by Tyler Knott Gregson | April 16th, 2007

I seriously can’t stress enough just how excited I am about the MoGo Headset being launched. Why am I, you might be asking? For starters, my current Bluetooth headset is, well, awful.

Right now I’m using a Logitech Bluetooth headset and I must admit, I paid over $80 for it. Here are my gripes:

    1. It hurts when you wear it any longer than 10 minutes. No, really, it HURTS. It makes it feel like your ear just got done being in the ring with Mike Tyson.
    2. It is static-y, and if you move any further than 12 inches away from the phone itself (yes, even it you try to leave the phone in your pocket) it starts to break up radically and make it sound like you are literally trapped inside your TV’s snowstorm when the cable goes out.
    3. It is big and looks big on my head. I feel like I should be beaming people up when I wear it, or lip syncing Britney Spears songs on stage somewhere.
    4. It takes a long time to be “found” by my cell phone. It’s not like my phone has to go on a treasure hunt, 50 paces this way, 90 paces that way, dig. Just find the silly thing!
    5. I have to charge it externally ALL THE TIME, and that means I have to constantly plug and un-plug the charger and move it around whenever I need to move around or travel. This, folks, is not helpful.

So, all those combine to form a powerful index of compatibility between me and my Logitech Headset. I really can’t wait for the release of the MoGo Headset. I really can’t.

We’re not the only ones who think the new MoGo Headset is cool!  Check out the coverage on EngadgetPocketPC Mag, Experience Mobility, Blog The Tech, Blog Network, Textually.org.

Okay this is all well and good, but check out this little commercial the MoGo folks sent us:

Yeah, very cool.  Can you imagine being able to carry your headset clipped to your phone?  No more looking for your headset or its charger (I lost my headset somewhere and I really needed it yesterday).  You know for me being able to Skype with it, then leave the house and just pair it up with my Berry will be so awesome.  Okay, it might start getting strange if I never take it off.

Maybe the MoGo skull implanted headset is coming?  Maybe with the optional direct eye interface for display right into your optic nerve?  Okay, that’s getting a little too Borg isn’t it.  Maybe someday.

Update: John Biggs of CrunchGear has had a look too and likes it.

  • Fresh New MoGo Headset: Welcome to the Future

by Tyler Knott Gregson | March 28th, 2007

You know when you’re walking around downtown, or on a subway, or in the grocery store and the person next to you starts talking to you, but when you respond you find out they really weren’t talking to you at all, but to someone on their headset? Yeah, I’ve always wanted to be one of those people, only cooler than those people. That day, my friends, is here.

    1.JPG

Makers of the MoGo Mouse just released the world’s thinnest, ultra-light Bluetooth headset, and man oh man is it cool. My favorite part about the whole thing, in true MoGo Mouse fashion, you can charge it by clipping it to a cell phone, or, yes, sliding it into your laptop. Get this, you can now talk, gossip, jabber, yak and spill all those beans for up to 6 hours of talk time on a single charge. People of the world, prepare to look like you’re talking to yourself all over the city!

    2.JPG

The ability to stay mobile is paramount in the world today and in that quest to be mobile, what good is it if all the “mobile” products you’re carrying are heavy, require tons of cables and power strips and adapters to work, and actually make you dread being that Road Warrior you know you want to be? No good friends, no good at all. This new product is so cool, it even won an award.  Veteran industry observer Andrew Seybold, presented Newton Peripherals with his “Most Imaginative Product” award last night and even went on to say, “The Headset is unique in both design and concept.  It will store conveniently on the back of a cell phone, ready to be used at a moment’s notice. Newton Peripherals’ approach to simplifying the use and storage of phone headsets is novel, and deserving of recognition.”  Here is the official press release of this sweet new product…live it, love it: Read the rest of this entry »
