Welcome to the Uncanny Valley

by Tyler Knott Gregson | March 31st, 2008

Wikipedia defines the Uncanny Valley as: “a hypothesis that when robots and other facsimiles of humans look and act almost, but not entirely, like actual humans, it causes a response of revulsion among human observers. The “valley” in question is a dip in a proposed graph of the positivity of human reaction as a function of a robot’s lifelikeness.”

Why am I bringing this up?  I don’t know, really just to link you to this site I found today that does more than freak me out.  Clearly I drove my car straight off the cliff and dove headfirst into the Uncanny Valley with this website visit, and I wanted you to as well.  In relation to technology, what does it all mean?  Simple really, it means we’re heading into a world where EVERYTHING is going to advance, Everything.  Already we are seeing new fuel opportunities arise, new ways of communicating, mice that fit INSIDE your computer and charge there…you name it, it’s either here, or on the way.

Head over, get properly freaked out, then head back to see how you can dip your baby toe into the future without all the “response of revulsion,” by getting your hands on one of your own aforementioned MoGo Mice.  How uncanny is your valley?  I guess time will tell.

  • Matt Westover’s CES Confessional on CNBC

by Tyler Knott Gregson | January 16th, 2008

This should be the last post about this years amazing CES 2008!  I just found another awesome little blurb on CNBC that is basically “Matt Westover’s CES Confessional” and lets you know exactly how Matt feels about the good people at CNBC, Deutsch Inc. and everyone at the CES that helped MoGo’s ride through be so extremely exciting, and extremely smooth!

I might be an idiot, but I can’t seem to figure out how to get this little baby embedded here, so in the meantime head over here, and let the little gem load.

    Enjoy!

  • CES 2008 & The MoGo Go Go Girls: Round 2!

by Tyler Knott Gregson | January 9th, 2008

Wow.  I can’t say I am necessarily Surprised, but nevertheless, the post I did about our beloved MoGo Go Go Girls received quite a bit of attention, and that said, I’m sure this one will do the same.

That’s right folks, I have a Round 2 Update of not only our favorite girls in white, but also the goings-on  inside CES this year!  Seems to me I’m missing one heck of a party and I’m sad to be stuck here!  Nevertheless, keep rockin’ MoGo, and the MoGo Go Go Girls!  Scroll for the photo love:

“CES 2008 Day 2 Updates with Photos.

Another good and exciting day at CES 2008 for MoGo and the MoGo Girls. Meetings are continuing to go great and the Mogo girls keep drawing in the people.

Matt Westover finished filming at CNBC for commercial that will air in the next couple weeks. We drew a great crowd presence throughout the hall today, maybe too good as we were asked to quietly leave because the traffic we drew. We kept going strong at the Sands Into tomorrow booth really pressing hard for tomorrow drawing of the limited edition Gold Mogo X54.

Off to the Bluetooth SIG awards.”

  • MoGo x54 Mouse: First Impressions

by Tyler Knott Gregson | November 12th, 2007

In a word:  Wow.  Photos of the MoGo X54 Mouse will be forthcoming, hands on photos, that is.  For now, all I can say is WOW.  The scrolling is smooth, the response time is amazingly fast, the accuracy of the pointer is spot-on, it charges fast, holds the charge forever and pairs in no time at all.

Secondly, and so so impressively to me, is the multi-media mode on the X54.  The ability to simply press the tiny Mode button on the back and have it switch to a remote controller for my iTunes, Windows Media Player, or other similar program on my computer was AMAZING.  From 35 feet away in my room, I was able to adjust the volume, change songs, pause, skip, fast forward and stop songs.  No getting up, no running around, just a simple push and you’re changing your music on the fly.  Unreal.

Bottom line, if you don’t have one yet, get one.  Now.   Be looking for some photos on Wednesday, they will be pretty and they will be saliva producing.  It’s almost Christmas, this would be such a perfect gift.

Also be looking out for first impressions for the MoGo Dapter.  I’ll say this:  Sweet.

  • Tech For All You Road Warriors

by Tyler Knott Gregson | May 7th, 2007

Guess what friends, things are getting lighter, stronger, faster, more efficient, and most of all, SMALLER.  With every day hour that passes someone somewhere is coming out with a tinier version of whatever it is you’re using right now.  I think we saw that in an extreme case last week with the Bluetooth Headset that literally fit INSIDE your ear canal.  Scary.

Nevertheless, technology certainly is catching up with the science fiction of our imaginations, and I just found a cool little article packed with Tech ideas for all you “space conscious” Road Warriors out there.  Lets face it, with airports cracking down on that 50lb rule, any extra size and/or weight we can drop without dropping the technology we know, love and desperately need, the better.

Head over, read up on some of Their tech ideas, then head back here for a daily onslaught of Our tech ideas.  I hate to toot our own horns, but folks, can you get any cooler, any more “Road Warrior-ish” than a fully operational mouse that weighs next to nothing and literally fits INSIDE your computer?  I don’t think so.

  • Running Linux? MoGo Mouse Works For You Too!

by Tyler Knott Gregson | April 27th, 2007

“Hi, I’m a Mac.” “Hi, I’m A PC.” We’ve all seen the commercials, we’ve all heard the debate, Apple vs. Windows, yada yada yada. What about all you folks that run the other software?

No worries Linux users, all is not lost if you’re running a Linux laptop…you too can enjoy all the sweet benefits of a MoGo Mouse on the road. The process is a little more work than pairing it to a Mac of a PC, but then again, if you’re running Linux, you’re probably ok with things requiring a little more smarts. Lucky for you, I found a walkthrough that makes it even easier than you might think!

That said, here’s how to get your MoGo Mouse paired with your computer, it’s not as bad as it sounds:

“First, find the Bluetooth address of the mouse with the hcitool command:

    % hcitool scan

     Scanning …

            AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF MoGo Mouse BT

Then tell the Linux HID daemon to connect to that Bluetooth device and use it as a mouse:

    % sudo hidd –connect=AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF

If your GNOME Bluetooth setup is configured correctly you’ll be asked to enter the mouse’s PIN and then you’ll be connected.

For convenience I’ve set up a GNOME application launcher to run the following command so that I don’t have to connect the mouse from the terminal every time I want to use it:

gksu –message=”Enter your password to authorise the connection to the MoGo mouse”

        “hidd –connect=AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF”

I’m not going to lie, I really don’t have a clue what any of that said, but if you’re a Linux user, I’m guessing you do! Enjoy!

  • Froogle & MoGo Mouse Prices

by Tyler Knott Gregson | April 20th, 2007

I have a bad feeling that despite all the buzz, despite all the hullabaloo, not enough of you are actually taking the plunge and buying a sweet MoGo Mouse. I can’t stress enough just how awesome this product is, how much I’ve used it since getting mine, and how happy I am to be the proud owner.

What I have noticed is this: Prices are lower! A quick run through Froogle showed that prices on the MoGo ranged from around $54 to right about $69.99. Folks, for that price, you can’t afford NOT to own one!
