Welcome to the Uncanny Valley

by Tyler Knott Gregson | March 31st, 2008

Wikipedia defines the Uncanny Valley as: “a hypothesis that when robots and other facsimiles of humans look and act almost, but not entirely, like actual humans, it causes a response of revulsion among human observers. The “valley” in question is a dip in a proposed graph of the positivity of human reaction as a function of a robot’s lifelikeness.”

Why am I bringing this up?  I don’t know, really just to link you to this site I found today that does more than freak me out.  Clearly I drove my car straight off the cliff and dove headfirst into the Uncanny Valley with this website visit, and I wanted you to as well.  In relation to technology, what does it all mean?  Simple really, it means we’re heading into a world where EVERYTHING is going to advance, Everything.  Already we are seeing new fuel opportunities arise, new ways of communicating, mice that fit INSIDE your computer and charge there…you name it, it’s either here, or on the way.

Head over, get properly freaked out, then head back to see how you can dip your baby toe into the future without all the “response of revulsion,” by getting your hands on one of your own aforementioned MoGo Mice.  How uncanny is your valley?  I guess time will tell.

  • Happy St. Patrick’s Day from MoGo!!

by Tyler Knott Gregson | March 17th, 2008

This, my friends, is from all of us at MoGo, to all of you out there…hopefully a lot of you are as Irish as I am (50% Irish/50% Scottish) and love this holiday as much as I do!

    That said:

    HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!!!

I hope you find the nearest pub, nearest friend, nearest parade, nearest leprechaun, nearest rainbow and whatever else you need to make it a fun holiday.  It’s not a big-one to a lot of people, but for us proud Irish, it sure is.

  • AT&T & T-Mobile Follow Suit: Unlimted Plans All Around

by Tyler Knott Gregson | February 26th, 2008

I said it yesterday, and I’m saying it today:  Verizon opened some doors baby.  Looks like those doors are opening pretty darn rapidly as AT&T AND T-Mobile are also now offering Unlimited Plans to their cell phone service customers!

This, my friends is great news.  The more open everything becomes, the more standardized the pricing, the better all of us are.  Looks like T-Mobile is shaking things up by putting their price point at $99/month and tossing in ALL forms of Messaging (voice, sms, mms, AND IM) while AT&T’s entry level unlimited plan is also $99, you’re looking at an additional $35 a month to toss in all messaging and web use.  No word yet on an unlimited plan for the much heralded iPhone, any Blackberries, or PDA’s.  An oversight I’m sure will be remedied quicker than slower.

Bottom line my friends, this is good news.  I want to hear your thoughts:  Sound off on what this means to you, to the industry, and what service provider you use!

  • Talking Back about that itty-bitty Laptop

by Elizabeth Blair York | February 21st, 2008

This is just my opinion, but…

The biggest wow at MacWorld had to be the “Air” - that new, tragically slim laptop that Apple unveiled. It could be argued that it’s the only other product out there that gives as good as the MoGo in the low-profile department.

But Air’s critics have been mounting. Primarily that it doesn’t come with a CD/DVD Drive (external one costs $99).

It was a bigger issue that Slate’s Harry McCracken came up with that has been ringing around in my head for a couple of weeks.

Now I’m going to put it in front of you.

Why is the Air a step backward from the iPhone?

    No, Seriously.

The reason the iPhone (And its non-Apple cousins) blew us all off our feet was because that little device gets it.

The Future is Less Stuff that Does More.

We, the People, do not want to keep marching to the future wearing a superhero utility belt holding our 2 dozen gadgets.

This is why the MoGo rocks - because it is not only cool AND functional, but it stores in the device it augments. One fewer thing to worry about.

The plain truth is that phones and laptops (and computers and televisions) are converging. The iPhone was the standard-bearer of that reality. Internet + MP3 + Phone. That was 3 devices plucked from the utility belt and tossed in the bin, replaced by a single wicked multi-tasker.

The next tick in the evolution should not only have been a thin big dog laptop, but one that does more.  For example, when MoGo rolled out the next gen of its product, it had more functionality.

The Air should have, too. It should be touchscreen, it should have cell-hookup capabilities, it should act like -in fact - an iPhone with a whole lot more memory and display and applications. After all, this is Apple. If they don’t get it, then who will?

    So, what do YOU think?

  • Do you know Jack? His interview is a candidate for an award…

by Elizabeth Blair York | February 15th, 2008

The CES interview with MoGo’s own Jack Corrao is getting some hot attention over at MetaCafe!

    Check it out for yourself.

You gotta love watching Dave attempting to pronounce Jack’s name.  But it’s all cool ‘cuz Jack’s all about the product. They get into all the details, especially the laser pointer. Watch them have fun talking about everyone’s #1 upgrade wish after the first MoGo shipped… a scroll wheel!

(Which of course is standard on the X54).

  • Worth The Wait

by Elizabeth Blair York | February 6th, 2008

A couple of new reviews of the X54…

First of all, the intrepid and patient Andy Fertal wrote that he’s received his new MoGo X54. Andy has often commented here, was one of the first to order the new release, and was enthusiastically awaiting delivery as deliveries caught up with the huge backlog of pre-orders.

    This is what he wrote;

    I got my Mo-Go (X54 Pro) workin!

After a loooooong wait, I received my X54 Pro from Tiger Direct on December 21st… one day after I had left for a two-week trip to Mexico. Sadly, I had to lug around my Microsoft Wireless Presentation Mouse 8000, which works great, but requires batteries and a storage case and weighs at least five to ten times what the X54 Pro weighs.

..but now I’m back and I got my Mo-Go workin’…..

The X54 Pro is great! It protrudes just enough from the X54 slot on my Dell Laptop to allow for easy insertion and removal. Once it is paired, it is recognized by the system (Windows XP) upon startup prior to login so you can slip it out of the slot and begin using it immediately. The scroll function and center (scroll wheel) click functions are a great addition to the original 2-button Mo-Go design.

The overall feel when in ‘mouse’ mode is much more solid than I had expected. It is also quick and responsive and tracks well on a variety of surfaces. The ‘presentation’ mode functions well with PowerPoints and Windows Media player and does everything the Microsoft Presentation Mouse 8000 does except provide volume control.

All in all, the X54 Pro is a great product and has my vote as one of the most useful new computer gadgets to come along in quite a while….

    Andy Fertal

Andy - thank you from all of us for that great review, and for being such a great customer!

Over at VNUNET, the reviewers are also impressed with the X54 MoGo.

Although at first a little sceptical of the design; “What at first appears to be an extremely uncomfortable mouse actually turns out to be surprisingly pleasant in use.”

In the end? They give it 4 stars!

Just more evidence of how exiting and revolutionary the mouse is!

  • MoGo Goes Elsewhere…Internet Praise From a Microsoft MVP!

by Tyler Knott Gregson | February 4th, 2008

If I’ve said it once I have said it a million times…nothing is better on a Monday morning than waking up and finding in my feed reader a post from someone that is in love with the MoGo Mouse.  Lucky for you and I, today was one of those days!

That’s right my faithful friends, I just so happened to find a post over on John Robbins’ Blog!  John was one of the rad individuals selected as a Microsoft Valuable Professional and as such was awarded a MoGo Mouse BT in his little care package!  That said, he had some pretty darn good things to say about our little product that could.  Here’s a little quote from his post:

“I just needed a mouse for a short time, I popped out the MoGo Mouse. After a painless pairing with my Lenovo X60 Tablet, I got to work. After ten minutes of real use I realized that the MoGo Mouse is far more comfortable than I could have ever imagined. In fact, I haven’t pulled out my Microsoft mouse since.”

First off, congrats on the MVP award, second off, thank you for your kind words.  We couldn’t be happier you enjoy the product and know it will serve you well in the months to come!

  • iPhone Gets Software Update

by Tyler Knott Gregson | January 23rd, 2008

Fairly sure unless you’ve been living under a rock, you are well aware of the iPhone, the need for an update, and all the people that tried to manipulate theirs themselves and ended up with a big fat brick.  Ooops.

That said my friends, a REAL iPhone software update is finally here and by the sounds of things, it helps do some pretty nifty things.  According to the article I just read the new update allows users, “to find their location using the Maps application; text message multiple people in one message; create Web Clips for websites; customize their home screen; and watch movies rented from the iTunes Movie Rentals.”

While the iPhone notoriously lacks GPS, something that I’m guessing will be remedied in the future renditions of the device, the new update lets users find their location “automatically” by triangulating their position based on WiFi access points, and cell phone towers…good Lord, wouldn’t adding GPS just be, well, easier?

That said, if you are an iPhone user, use your iTunes to get things updated…I’m quite sure you’ll be happy.
